Beyonce Knowles College:
Beyonce Knowles, raised in Texas, attended St. Mary's Elementary School and started taking dance classes at the school from a young age. When she was 7, winning first prize at the school talent show for her rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine" encouraged her to take a more serious interest in music and performing. To that end she enrolled in the music magnet school Parker Elementary in 1990, joining the school choir. As an adolescent, she went first to the High School of Performing and Visual Arts and then to Alief Elsik High School, singing as a soloist at St. John's United Methodist Church throughout. In the meantime, the all-girl entertainment group Girl's Tyme that young Beyonce had formed with two friends at age 8 began gaining traction. In 1995, Grass Roots Entertainment signed the group after two other labels had dropped them, and they finally began recording their album. A year later the trio that had since changed its name to Destiny's Child was offered a contract by Columbia Records. Destiny's Child quickly racked up popularity and a Grammy Award, but Beyonce eventually became a solo artist. Her dazzling success got in the way of her finishing high school, but she has become one of the best-selling music artists of all time, has won 17 Grammy Awards, and was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
