Halle Berry, born Maria Halle Berry, was raised exclusively by her mother, a psychiatric nurse. She attended Bedford High School, an almost all-white public school where she experienced racial discrimination from her peers. These attacks motivated her to achieve as much as she could, so the industrious teen was a newspaper editor, class president, and head cheerleader, all while earning beauty pageant titles like Miss Teen Ohio and Miss Teen America. She went on to attend Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, studying broadcast journalism, but decided to put aside her education to pursue an entertainment career early on and dropped out of Cuyahoga. In 1989, she moved to New York City and won her film debut only a few years later in Spike Lee's Jungle Fever. The young stunner quickly rose to fame; today, Berry is one of the highest paid actresses in the world, the only African-American woman to win an Oscar for a leading role, and a Revlon spokesmodel.
