Ian Murray McKellen perseveres through all things good and bad; it's how he was raised. Born into a conservative Christian family, he was taught to treat everyone the way you would want to be treated. Born May 25th, 1939, just before the start of World War II, Ian had a very loving and supportive family. Due to cancer, his mother passed away when he was just twelve; tragically, his father was killed in a car accident twelve years after that. His education in the ways of theater began at a young age, his parents took him to many Shakespearean plays and the theater. He attended the Bolton School--his acting career started at the Bolton Little Theater. In addition to acting, Ian was also a very strong student, winging a scholarship to the University of Cambridge's St Catherine's College, where he read English Literature. His foray into theater was quite accomplished, and in 1991 Sir Ian Mc Kellen was knighted for his achievements on the stage. Of course, he is also well known for his popular roles in movies; Gandalf, Magneto, and "The Da Vinci Code".
