Jennifer Lopez was raised in the Bronx and began taking singing and dancing lessons at age 5. At home, she and her two sisters put on performances in front of their parents, who encouraged her to learn to speak English well and to work hard for what she wanted. Lopez attended Preston High School, where she did gymnastics, ran track, and played softball. In her senior year, she auditioned and was cast for a low-budget film; the experience made her realize that she wanted to pursue a career in acting. Not wanting to disappoint her parents, though, the young beauty enrolled in Baruch College for a semester before returning to her dream of performing. Her parents discouraged her, telling her that Latinos didn't become movie stars, and yet she was tenacious in her struggles. After performing in several musical productions, she was hired as a backup dancer for Mew Kids on the Block at age 22. From there she became a Fly Girl dancer on the television series In Living Color, and continued to receive roles in television and film until her breakthrough role as Selena in the film of the same name. The movie launched her into worldwide fame, leading to more film roles and the release of her single, "If You Had My Love". It turned out that music was her calling, as Lopez' album became a bestseller overnight and the actress became more well-known for her pop-hits. She never did graduate from college, but her parents can be proud of their multi-talented daughter for her record sales in the millions, her clothing lines, and her production company, not to mention her net worth of approximately $250 million.
