The way you view the circumstances that shape your life, for better or worse, will decide the outcome of your future. And, thankfully for all of us, the lovely Jill Scott decided to see the beauty in the darkness of her upbringing. Raised by her mother and grandmother, Jill was surrounded by love; and it was well received. By the time she was eight months old, Jill was talking and she was reading by the time she was four. Life in Philly may not have been an easy one for sweet Jill, but it was quite memorable. The lessons of hard work and perseverance taught her were part of what led her to become the amazing performer we now know. After attending the Philadelphia high school for Girls, Ms. Scott began her formal education at Temple University studying Secondary Education. She had every intention of becoming a high school English teacher—until her time as an aide. The other teachers didn't appreciate the way Jill wanted to use music to help with memorization, so she dropped out. Thankfully, she had a friend in the theater who helped Jill get connected. And through many trials and a lot of heart, she was able to earn a role in the Canadian cast of Rent, which aided in launching her musical career.
