Kylie Ann Minogue grew up in Melbourne, Australia and, as a child, appeared on Australian television with her sisters. She began acting in soap operas from age eleven, following her precocious small-screen career with a singing performance in 1985 at age seventeen. After graduating Camberwell High School, she became an Australian darling when she played Charlene Mitchell on Neighbors. A year later, Minogue was signed to Mushroom Records, her first single spending seven weeks at number one in Australia and her next single breaking out into the broader European markets. She released her debut record, Kylie, after another year, and this cemented her status as international pop star: her album went gold in the U.S. and sold almost a million copies. She never received a higher level of formal education, but did get an honorary Doctor of Health Sciences by Anglia Ruskin University for her tireless work on breast cancer awareness, has sold more than 70 million records, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II for "services to music".
