Natalie Wood, born Natalia Nikolaevna Zacharenko, on July 20th 1938, first worked in films as a child. Although she stated as an adult, “I'm very Russian, you know”, she spoke both English and Russian with an American accent. She was born in San Francisco, but the family moved shortly after her birth to nearby Sonoma County, and lived in Santa Rosa, about an hour north of San Francisco proper, where she was first noticed during a film shoot in downtown Santa Rosa. Her mother subsequently moved the family to Los Angeles and pursued a career for her daughter. She made her film debut at the age of four in the 1943 film Happy Land. At the age of seven, she worked opposite Orson Welles and Claudette Colbert in Tomorrow is Forever. Welles later said that Wood was a born professional: “so good, she was terrifying.” By 1947, she was so popular that she was invited to appear in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. She graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1956.
